Gunn’s Student Government Class (A UC approved "G" elective) is a one-year course in which all elected and appointed ASB officers are enrolled. The primary responsibilities of the ASB Officers (otherwise known as the Student Executive Council, or SEC) include communicating with and representing the Student Body, as well as the planning and production of all-school activities, and oversight of clubs and student funds. Through this process, we seek to promote citizenship, scholarship, leadership, and human relations.
The SEC's responsibilities can be divided into three parts: Money, Fun, and Leadership Development:
Part 1: Money
The Student Executive Council (SEC) consists of the voting members of the ASB Student Government. The ASB Officers function under the parameters of the ASB Constitution, and have been approved by the district’s Board of Trustees to maintain student funds. Student funds are to be spent on non-curricular activities that directly and indirectly benefit students.
Every week, the SEC meets to process the requests for expenditures from the various student organizations on campus. This includes the publications, extracurricular clubs, and class accounts. Money in the ASB and club accounts is derived through fundraising and donations.
The student council keeps track of all funds and records financial decisions in the Leadership Council minutes. They also set the budget for the school year and approve club spending. This oversight helps prepare the Student Activities Office for their annual audit of Student Body, Class and Club accounts.
Part 2: Fun
The SEC is also responsible for planning and executing activities that foster school spirit and make high school memorable.
The SEC, under the supervision of the Activities Director, plans ASB sponsored events like dances, activities at brunch and lunch, Homecoming Week, Wellness and community service events, assemblies, rallies, and intramural sports. They also help clubs and other school organizations with their events and provide them with extra hands and supplies when requested.
Event Planning Teams: The activities that fall under SEC would not be able to happen without organized planning! Officers who have events as part of their officer duties meet with their event teams to review plans, assign tasks and check in with team members on completion of assignments. Most officers will be a Team Leader at one point and will also participate as a member in at least two Event Teams a Semester.
Part 3: Leadership Development
The Student Government class is devoted to providing students with opportunities to improve their individual leadership skills. Below are typical activities we do in class:
Leadership Council is used to process all requests to spend Student Body money, discuss upcoming events and student government policy, and to review and vote on proposals. Visitors may present proposals at meetings as well. The ASB President prepares an agenda and facilitates the meeting. After the meeting, the ASB Secretary posts the minutes online.
As part of the course, students will participate in activities to help build on leadership skills, including public speaking, committee work, leadership lessons, and event planning. A long-term project will also be assigned.
